Sale Police Station

Sale, Victoria

The corner of Reeve Street and Foster Street is the unofficial gateway for the Port City of Sale. The site’s prominence elevated above Reeve Street is visible upon approaching the city via the Princes Highway. This site and its original establishment as the HM Sale Gaol officially opened in August 1887. The facility operated as a Gaol for 110 years with its closure inevitable due to the dilapidation of the facility infrastructure. Subsequently, the skeletal building fabric of the external wall on Reeve Street remained as the only physical remnant of an era long since passed. The State Government (Victoria Police) acquired the site as it lay dormant for years with the intention of this site becoming Sale’s new 24hr Police Station. The new 24 Hour Sale Police Station serves as an important civic building for Sale. Fusing the heritage wall and the new building into a respectful partnership was the vision for the design. Framing the existing wall and its inherent beauty preserves the site’s history whilst creating an architectural currency into the future. The building is stoic, humble and present, further reinforcing the role of the modern day police force and the service they provide our community.
