The Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, located in Christchurch, New Zealand, is set to be one of the largest indoor sports and aquatic facilities in the Southern Hemisphere. Designed to meet the needs of both high-performance athletes and the local community, Parakiore combines cutting-edge design with extensive recreational, fitness, and wellness offerings, contributing significantly to the revitalization of Christchurch's city centre.
A collaborative design between architects Peddle Thorp Architects, Warren and Mahoney Architects and MJMA (MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects).
The facility will feature multiple indoor pools, including a 50-meter competition pool, a dedicated diving pool, a learn-to-swim pool, and leisure water areas complete with play features for families. Complementing the aquatic facilities are expansive indoor courts for basketball, netball, and volleyball, as well as spaces for fitness training, group exercise, and rehabilitation services. Parakiore’s high-performance training spaces and multi-sport amenities provide a comprehensive environment for athletic development and community engagement.
Sustainability has been a priority in the design of Parakiore, with environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and water conservation initiatives integrated throughout.
